6 Color Scheme Tools
COLORlovers
The biggest resource community for colour palettes as well as patterns. Plus points that they spell “colour”correctly my British way.Kuler
From Adobe it pretty much works the same way as COLORlovers where you also create your own schemes or edit others accordingly.Colorotate
This site is a little more interactive and fun with the 3D elements. In addition there are few fun mixing/blending options.Color Scheme Designer
The Wheel! A great resource for creating schemes as well options for “light-er” or “dark-er” versions.Pictaculous
There are a few picture-to-colours applications but this is my favourite as, in my opinion, its most accurate. In addition to finding you colours from an image you’ve uploaded, it suggests other similar colour schemes from Colourlovers and Kuler. You can also download swatch files which I find useful.Color Palette Generator (DeGraeve.com)

I’ve been reading up on body language and stuff trying to make my comics less stiff. I put my notes into reference sheet form so other people can use them. I actually took a while making this, so I hope you guys find it interesting!
Also, this font didn’t have apostrophes or quotes so a lot of things seem awkward!? Sorry about that.
also I didnt know this before I made it but the book I was taking notes on is already online… d’oh
So SOMEONE *cough*Yamino*cough* voiced concerns over 8’s portrayal in TH. All I can say is her first… 2? appearances were written when I was younger, back when she was still part of the disposable MAJ12. Obviously her, 6, and FJ12 have become way more prominent characters so as I’ve continued writing TH, I’ve matured their characters as well. YOU JUST HAVE TO LET ME GET THERE. lol I can’t go back and change a lot of what I’ve written because A) It’s already out there and B) plot-wise it’s gotten me where I’ve needed to go with the main characters.
Needless to say she becomes part of the mainstay rabble of characters and her personality slowly overhauls as the story progresses. Just stick with me on this. Stick with me. *THBROHUG* It’s my first comic but I’m not a moron. hahaha
I’m actually not the one who first voiced the issue, Emy, a couple of my female friends of color brought it up to me. I don’t bring these things up to bother you, I do it because I love you and your comic (and 8!) and I know other people do as well. Having an honest conversation about potentially problematic elements isn’t an attack, it comes from a desire to help you understand how your story might be coming off to certain readers who might be associating with that character. (In this case, women of color.)
I understand all too well the difficulty of changing characters once you established them years ago. I’ve had similar issues with “Sister Claire.” If I could, I would definitely go back and retcon some things that I’ve only learned or noticed now could be problematic. Like the fact that adding the twins (originally meant as a one panel gag, but now part of the main cast) has made the main cast all white, all blonde/redheads, all blue-eyed. (Minus Catharine.) That’s a problem! And right now, there’s not much I can do about it, because I wrote myself into that hole before I even knew what a problem it was.
I wish people in my early concept stages would have taught me about stuff like this. It was certainly never discussed in my scripting classes or concept art classes at SCAD, which is a shame. Creators like us need to be informed to prevent stuff like this happening way down the line when it’s too late to change things.
So far, I’ve really liked your plans for making 8 have a more rounded personality and backstory. I know I’m only going to like her more as she gets more opportunities to shine. =)
The Secret to Composition
“Exasperated by composition tutorials that go on about the rule of thirds but don’t explain why it works (or even that much detail how to use it), I decided to make my own.
This should be applicable to both painters and photographers, with occasional tips for one or the other in particular. ” - LulieRight click + New Tab to see the images bigger.
Good to know.
a neat perspective trick that you should know
say you drew a box and you want this box to become, I don’t know, a building:
and you want to divide the sides of the box in half, so you can know where to put the windows and doors and whatever! if you eyeball it, you’re probably going to miss the halfway point, and it will look stupid:
that is incorrect. if you want to bisect a side of a box in perspective, try doing this instead:
1. draw x’s connecting the corners of each side of the box
2.draw a line through the exact center of the x’s, running parallel to the edges of that side
3. that’s it. now you have perfectly bisected sides, so you know where to draw your doors or anything else that this box might have on it.
but that’s not all!
you can do the exact same thing to the new faces you created, if you want to divide the sides up further.
sploosh
keep going!
you can draw so many doors or windows or anything! I don’t care what you draw, it’s your box.
this is one of the best time-saving tips I’ve ever come across. do you need an entire perspective grid? the x method has you covered!
let’s make a simple one-point perspective grid:
draw a square, figure out where the center of vision will be (hint: for one point perspective, it’s always smack dab in the center of the side facing you).
draw a bigger square around that square.
connect the corners of these two squares, so it looks like an open box.
USE THAT X-METHOD
MORE SUBDIVISIONS
DRAW LINES THROUGH THE CENTER OF THE X’S TO GET YOUR VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL GUIDES
NOW DRAW YOUR DIAGONAL GUIDES (the corresponding sides of your two squares must be divided equally, into an equal number of segments. connect these segments to get your diagonal guides).
baby you got a stew going!
the x-method might not be 100% correct in every case, but it’s great for just getting stuff done and making it look right. I made that entire one-point grid in under ten minutes. now if I want to draw a room, I have easy-to-follow guidelines and they only took a little bit of time to make.
the x-method comes from Perspective! for Comic Book Artists, which you should read because it is amazing. read the shit out of it.

Drawing the differences in ages
1. The size and angularity of the neck and shoulders: Babies start out with thick necks, but then by the time we’re 5 or 6 our necks seem to look pretty skinny (at least I’ve found it seems to look that way in drawings). Our shoulders, obviously, start out small and get broader and broader as we get older (this is more apparent in men than in women, of course). Also I made a conscious effort to make his shoulders start out rounded and get more angular as he ages. If I’d kept going, drawing this guy into old age, I would have made the shoulders start to shrink (and get more rounded again) as he aged.
2. The relation of the mouth to the chin: I simply made the mouth get further away from the chin as he ages, to give a feeling of a jaw that develops as he gets older. Also I made the jawline stronger and more angular with each successive age.
3. The amount of upturn in the nose: I made it turned up more in the younger drawings, and made it less so over time.
4. The size of the forehead: We have a bigger forehead when we’re young, and it diminishes proportionally over time.
5. The chubbiness of the cheeks: most of us have less fat in our cheeks as we age.
